Does CBD work for pain and inflammation?

Pain has a way of sneaking up on you. At first it’s a slight discomfort on the edge of your awareness; gradually, wherever it’s originating in your body, it can focus your attention and make it pretty much impossible for you to do the things you want to do.

Whether you hardly notice it, it’s moderate, or severe, pain goes hand-in-hand with your body’s inflammatory response to injury or illness, and as you age, pain can become a more-or-less constant companion through conditions like arthritis. If you’re an athlete, pain can also follow workouts, or other instances when you physically overdo it.

For most of us, the front-line remedy for pain and inflammation is to reach for one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen. We also all know that NSAIDs sometimes work and sometimes don’t — and they often come with unwanted side effects. Ibuprofen can cause kidney damage; acetaminophen can cause liver damage. Aspirin can cause stomach upset, and long-term use has been linked to hearing loss in men.

Prescription NSAIDs include celecoxib, diclofenac, etodolac and ketoprofen — and never mind how you pronounce them, they come with a long list of warnings. For some of these medications, the cure ends up being as bad or worse than the disease. The New England Journal of Medicine, in June of 1999,  estimated that 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur every year just among Americans with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. And more than 100,000 NSAIDs users are hospitalized per year for gastrointestinal complications.

CBD: Your plant-based killer of pain

Doesn’t it make sense, when treating pain, to go with a plant-derived, natural alternative without side effects? Many athletes are using CBD to calm their pain, and help them sleep. There are not yet clinical studies showing the efficacy of CBD for pain, but a study from the European Journal of Pain, using an animal model, found that CBD applied  as a topical skin cream could help lower arthritis pain and inflammation.

And really, if you have pain, what’s more risky? Medications with serious long-term side effects, or a plant-based topical, tincture or capsule that many people say helps them better handle pain, and the anxiety and insomnia that can come with it?

At Kannaboomers we only recommend pure and potent CBD oil products that have been certified as high quality. These are our picks for addressing pain and inflammation.
